Midwest US Retail Chain Hy-Vee Adds Blackbird’s Plant-Based Pizzas Across 88 Stores – vegconomist
Plant-based food manufacturer Blackbird Foods has expanded its retail distribution with the rollout of its frozen New York-style pizzas in 88 Hy-Vee supermarket locations across the US Midwest. The pizzas, made in New York City, are available in three varieties: Margherita, Supreme, and Pepperoni featuring Beyond Meat® Beyond Pepperoni.
Vegan pizza, NYC style
Co-founder Emanuel Storch commented on the latest expansion, stating, “We’re excited to bring our NY-style pizzas to Hy-Vee shoppers. Our mission has always been to make restaurant-quality plant-based food more accessible, and this launch is a big step in that direction.”
The Hy-Vee rollout follows a series of developments for the New York-based company. Earlier in 2025, Blackbird was acquired by Ahimsa Companies, a plant-based investment firm that also recently purchased alternative chicken brand Simulate. Around the same time, Blackbird secured shelf space for its plant-based wings at Wegmans.
3,000+ stores and counting
Blackbird Foods, founded in 2020, produces plant-based frozen pizzas, wings, and seitan products, and currently distributes to more than 3,000 retail locations nationwide. Its pizzas are made with dough that undergoes an overnight rising process and are marketed as fully vegan, non-GMO, dairy-free, and cholesterol-free. The pizzas are designed to be oven-ready and cook in approximately eight minutes.
The company’s existing retail footprint includes major chains such as Whole Foods Market, Target, and Sprouts.
The suggested retail price for the new Hy-Vee offerings is $9.99.
