Soy has phytoestrogens, which are a special group of phytonutrients that occur naturally in almost all plant foods. They’re called phytoestrogens, ‘phyto’, meaning plant because they interact with estrogen receptors and share a similar structure to estrogen, but they are *not estrogen*. Phytoestrogens have less of an estrogenic effect on humans than true bioactive hormones, which ARE found in animal products.

In the last couple of decades, it has been identified that nearly all body tissues do exert a response to estrogens, and about 60-80% of estrogens come from milk and dairy products in western diets. It has been found that these hormones even at very low doses, may have significant biological effects, and there is an increasing body of evidence which indicates that estradiol (a form of estrogen found in cows milk) plays a role in the initiating of various cancers. For example, studies have shown that there’s a strong correlation between prostate and testicular cancers and the consumption of milk and dairy products, and studies have also shown that dairy consumption is linked to an increased risk of getting breast cancer (Malekinejad & Rezabakhsh, 2015).

** True story: I had an irregular menstrual cycle throughout most of my life. I was a vegetarian before I went vegan, and ditching dairy is what helped me regulate my cycle. My cycles have been mostly regular since I went vegan in 2017. Consuming cheese and other milk products with hormones that are meant for baby calves to consume, is not natural for humans and definitely affects our bodies. This is also the reason why so many people are lactose intolerant.

Truth:
If you believe plants are sentient despite them not having a central nervous system which is required for feeling and having a subjective experience then you are denying the scientific consensus and are the equivalent of a flat earther. If you believe that you can’t be healthy on a plant based diet despite the largest organization of nutrition professionals on the planet the academy of nutrition and dietetics saying a plant based diet is suitable for all stages of life, you are denying the scientific consensus and are the equivalent of a flat earther, if you believe ldl cholesterol which is only found in animal products doesn’t cause heart disease, humans main cause of death, despite it being the scientific consensus as well as the leading cardiologists in the world saying it does, you are denying the scientific consensus and are the equivalent of a flat earther.

“It is the position of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics that appropriately planned vegetarian, including vegan, diets are healthful, nutritionally adequate, and may provide health benefits for the prevention and treatment of certain diseases. These diets are appropriate for all stages of the life cycle, including pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood, adolescence, older adulthood, and for athletes. Plant-based diets are more environmentally sustainable than diets rich in animal products because they use fewer natural resources and are associated with much less environmental damage. Vegetarians and vegans are at reduced risk of certain health conditions, including ischemic heart disease, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, certain types of cancer, and obesity..”
