Neal Barnard, MD, FACC, is an Adjunct Professor of Medicine at George Washington University and President of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. Dr. Barnard has led research on diet and its effects on diabetes, weight, and pain, including a study showing type 2 diabetes can be reversible with diet. He has written over 100 scientific articles and 20 books, and is the editor in chief of the Nutrition Guide for Clinicians.
As the committee’s president, he promotes preventive medicine, good nutrition, and ethical research standards. His work helped plant-based diets gain recognition in U.S. dietary guidelines. In 2015, he was named a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, and in 2016, he founded the Barnard Medical Center to integrate nutrition in medical care. He has worked with the Medical Society of the District of Columbia and the American Medical Association to focus on nutrition in federal policies and medical practice. Dr. Barnard received the Distinguished Service Award in 2018 and has hosted four PBS programs on health and nutrition.
